Five Guys Burgers and Fries, a restaurant chain with a cult-like following and known for its famous juicy burgers, kosher style hotdogs and fresh cut fries chose its Lakewood, Ohio location in an outdated storefront on Detroit Road in the heart of the city.
All of the existing badly damaged brick was removed and replaced with a newly framed thin brick application allowing for more depth and color to the facade. New storefront glazing, doors, fabric awnings and lights were added to enhance the buildings character. A new added feature to the building is a shared covered patio space using the existing building roof that allows for outdoor seating and provides a strong community connection between the building and surrounding environment. The existing stone cornice located at the top of the building was cleaned, restored and integrated into the design by adding a stepped thin brick parapet on top gaining height and depth to the existing flat facade. A detached, illuminated blade sign also adds additional character to the building while playing on the historic signage style of Lakewood's past.
The west side of the building also received a face lift by painting the existing brick and adding new punched windows, awnings and facade lighting. More signage in the form of a full painted mural balances the space out with a feeling of old meets new.
In addition to the exterior work and the Five Guys tenant space, Vocon conducted an entire interior retrofit subdividing the building into additional spaces and bringing the building to acceptable leasing standards.
