Completed in November 2008, The Weather Channel’s 24/7, 12,500-square-foot HD broadcast facility was the first of its kind to attain LEED-New Construction Gold certification. The sustainable and energy-efficient building is attached to the company’s corporate headquarters and includes the latest technology and innovations. Vocon integrated a wide range of green initiatives into the high-performing building, including using heat from studio lights to warm the building and an underground pond to irrigate the landscaping. It is designed to reduce energy consumption by 25%, and a roofing system reflects 90% of the sun’s rays, lowering air conditioner usage. More than 86% of the construction waste was recycled and nearly 25% (in cost) of the building materials were manufactured within 500 miles, reducing travel costs and energy. Indoor air quality was maximized with low-VOC products, such as paint, adhesives, sealants and carpeting.
